Brief introduction of Thai Binh province

Thai Binh is a coastal province in Northern Vietnam’s Red River Delta region, with a territory of over 1.500 km2, a population of nearly 1.9 million people. The centre of the province – Thai Binh city is 110km to the south-east from Hanoi, and 70 km to the south-west from the city of Hai Phong.

The province is small but has a tremendous number of over 2.200 historical places, of which many have been categorized as Special and National heritages (Keo pagoda, Tran Dynasty temple, Tien La temple, Great man of culture Le Quy Don’s memorial site). In addition, Thai Binh has a large number of well–known traditional handicraft villages (Dong Sam silver casting, Minh Lang embroidery, Nam Cao weaving ...). The province is also rich in folk culture: having 200 traditional festivals, being the native place of Cheo (the oldest and most famous Vietnamese traditional folk music performance) and water puppetry. Thai Binh people known to be honest, friendly and hardworking. 

In terms of economic development, the province’s GRDP in 2016 is estimated at $2.7 billion, average economic growth rate is 10% a year. The economic structure is relatively balanced with comparable contributions of Industry, Services and Agriculture; GRDP per capita is about $1,500. Regarding social and cultural fields, many achievements have been obtained. Public welfare, public security and social orders are well maintained; the majority of people enjoy quite good material and spiritual lives.

Thai Binh has many favorable conditions for agricultural development, because of its flat terrain, fertile land with more than 90 thousand hectares of agricultural land; tropical climate, tropical monsoon, is very suitable for the growth and development of potato and other vegetables that other countries in the region do not have. In addition, Thai Binh has a coastline of 54km long and tidal flats of 250km2, which is very favorable for the development of aquaculture and capture fishery, especially brackish water aquaculture and clam farming. Thai Binh accounts for 45% of the clam production of the country.

About industrial production and service: Thai Binh is developing textile, yarn, leather and footwear, sanitary wares, glass and crystal industries. In addition, Thai Binh has strength in the development of agricultural product processing industry, food industry and ecological sea tourism.

Thai Binh has plenty of energy sources, including:

- Natural gas resources in the continental shelf (with a reserve of over 10 billion m3) which have been exploited by Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group, with an output of 200 million m3 of gas per year.

- A deep coal source, with a reserve of 90% of the Red River Delta coal reserve (about 210 billion tons). Currently, the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacoal) is experimentally exploiting to selects suitable technologies for official operation.

In addition, Thai Binh has abundant high quality human resources with the number of people in working age is over 1.0 million, of which 55% are trained workers. Thai Binh has two major universities (Thai Binh Medical University and Thai Binh University); 4 colleges and 43 vocational training centers with a vocational training scale of 23,000 people per year.

In terms of production area: The province has has established 6 IPs and 33 ICs, total area over 1,800 ha, of which, over 1,100 ha of land have been approved detailed planning, ready to attract investors.

However, as a result of its disadvantageous geological position: bounded by the East sea and 3 rivers, Thai Binh has severely suffered from climate change. It is also one of the provinces suffering most from the two wars, with over 51.00 people dead, 32.000 wounded. Especially, it has 34.000 victims of Agent Orange, 125.000 disabled people and 110.00 people who are in need of social patronage (a highest figure compared to those of other cities and provinces).
